Culture Ghost, you wicked spatial abberation! What do i do now?
A book meme because i've been tagged. never done one of these, so here goes:
Book that changed my life: i'm staring at our vintage of vintage shelves and wondering "what the hell do i read anyway?" my life has been changed a number of times by words, i'd have to say, the first and most memorable time was young, very young, reading Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by T.S Eliot. I memorized the whole thing and was appalled as a young pup at the musical based on it. Changed my life because I had the power of memorization at hand, and with that I could recite on cue anything and thus stun a 4th grade class with my power of speech. It wasn't my own words, but hey, it taught me how to cite a source and be the star at the same time.
Book I've read more than once: Cosmopolis by Stephen Toulmin. I go back to it to make sure i've gotten it right. A professor at UCLA mentioned it offhandendly.
A book I would take with me if i were stuck on a desert island: Finnegans' Wake, James Joyce
A book that made me laugh: Candide, Voltaire. (this is figured out from my shelf.) it's a play, and often really done badly, but for its time searingly funny. like Rowan Atkinson
A book that made me cry: Birth of a Nation 'hood, ed. Toni Morrison...what happened to los angeles and the country after the Rodney King Riots. (i lived in los angeles at this time.)
A book I wish had never been written: Win 32 system services. Rot in hell, microsoft. This baby loves her Linux. (and is willingly led there by the Otherh.)
A book I've been meaning to read: Keep the Aspidistra Flying, Orwell. Because the Otherh really believes Orwell doesn't suck ass as a writer due to this heartwrencher.
I am currently reading: Being and Time, Heidegger (like always) and Triumph of Grace, Karl Barth. a little comparative theology, anyone? I get hung up on the German transl. but generally find the tautological rhethoric of Heidegger and Barth's transition down to Hitler rather stimulating.
god, i'm such a snob.
Tag: Mithras and Mitdasein because they will both proabably hate doing these things.
